Training Your Brain For A Long, Healthy & SMART Life

By Kathy Gottberg

In case you haven’t noticed, I am fascinated by the brain and write about it frequently. That might be because I’m a woman in my early sixties, had a mother diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her early 70’s, and have a sister just a couple of years older than me that constantly affirms, “I can’t remember anything!” and then does her best to prove it.  So, for several reasons including the fact that I’m a writer, I’ve grown attached to my brain and it’s creativity and strive to discover everything I can to help it stay healthy and functioning.  As it turns out, we can do plenty.  But we have to be willing to take care of and exercise our brains just like we do our bodies, or we’ll likely get whatever chance throws our way.

A Tale of Two Colonoscopies

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” so begins Charles Dickens classic novel, “A Tale of Two Cities.”  But that statement and the major themes of the story apply to most of the experiences of every person on the planet on a regular basis.   Do we allow the tragedy, inequity and oppression of life’s circumstances to beat us down—or like some characters in the book, do we reach for resurrection and transformation?  Even situations as routine or pedestrian as a colonoscopy offer us each of us a similar choice.  It’s SMART to always remember that decision is up to us. Work Less—Live SMARTer!

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working in Hawaii...

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working in Hawaii…

Do you think you work too hard?  You’re not alone.  Many people I talk to, especially those younger with families, report being over-worked, overwhelmed and clearly unable to take even a moment to pause and reflect on the direction of their life.  We all know that chronic overwork increases our stress levels, endangers our physical health, triggers depression and decreases our “life satisfaction.”  So why do we continue to put in long hours?  And what’s the solution?  It’s likely that the simple answer is to work less and live SMARTer.  In fact, there is evidence that working less not only increases the quality of an individual’s life—it is also much better for the entire planet.

Failing Forward and Other Ways To Re-Create The Future

By Kathy Gottberg

I’m like most people.  I don’t like the idea of failure.  Failure usually means I’ve done something wrong or wasted my time.  But what if failure were one of the best ways to experience a lifetime of forward growth and momentum?  And what if when I’m not failing on a regular basis, I’m not doing much of anything at all?  Like the statement, “grow or die,” maybe we’d all do well to start seeing the act of failing as a step on the path to a happy, exciting and SMART life.

Five Ways To Rethink Christmas Gifts—Without Being A Scrooge!

By Kathy Gottberg

Let’s admit it—all of us love to get and give gifts.  Just the idea of unwrapping a brightly adorned present stimulates the possibility of finding our dreams fulfilled.  Giving can be equally rewarding—with a sweet anticipation of connection and recognized love and appreciation from the receiver.  Unfortunately, much of the time the gifts we are given fall far short of our expected dreams.   At the same time, those we lavish gifts upon, often seem less than appreciative and oblivious to our hoped-for connections.  But when you think about it, maybe the fault isn’t in the desire to give and receive.   Instead, chances are it’s our routine and unconscious expectations of the season—and/or the less-than-altruistic manipulations of retailers.    That’s why it might be time to start rethinking all gift-giving in a brand new SMART way—and start enjoying Christmas even more.

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

An enormous part of the SMART Living lifestyle is the daily awareness of our overall well-being.  Do you know how you rate?  Conveniently you can now go to a website named “Twitter Well-Being Tracker” and take a short and simple online test that will give you a score.   Why is it called the “Twitter Well-Being Tracker”?  Probably because you have the option of posting your score on the Twitter website or not.  (Not sure why anyone would want to—but that is your choice.)  A big reason that we think this website deserves attention is that as the busy holiday season kicks in during the next few weeks, it will benefit everyone to stay mindful and aware about what truly makes us happy and content—and the Well-Being Tracker is great for just that! SMART Living 365 Recommends Your Local Public Library—For Free!

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

During the last couple of months SMART Living 365 has made it a habit to recommend a website or resource that brings richness to our lives.  Most of our recommendations have been online businesses or charities—but today’s recommendation is something many people (at least those that live in the US) take for granted.  And while some of our readers are international, and not every US citizen lives in an area with a large library system, we still want to point out the amazing benefits many of us can regularly use to increase the quality of our lives—and it’s mostly free!  That resource is your local public library.

Who/What Are You Listening To Today?

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365How many times have you seen a movie or listened to a story where a person has an angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other?  This example is classic because it’s universal to us all.  At any given time, on any given day, we have either the voice of our higher more compassionate self who is whispering in our ear—or we have that part of us that is most selfish, small-minded and paranoid sitting on the other.  The image of two little selves fighting for our attention is one that is graphically easy to remember.  Which do you listen to the most?

How Happy Do You Want To Be?

By Kathy Gottberg

One of the best-known quotes about happiness comes from President Abraham Lincoln.  He said, “A person is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be.”  That’s right, Lincoln, who was said to be the most respected and loved of any American President basically implied that my happiness, and your happiness, is up to us.  But why don’t more of us accept that as true?
