10 Ways Rightsizing Protects Us From Lifestyle Creep

By Kathy Gottberg

Are you a victim of “lifestyle creep?”  No matter how good a rightsizer you are, and I tend to think I’m usually pretty good at it, chances are you occasionally find yourself slipping into the creep now and then.  I know I do.  That’s because in our culture, nearly all of us are continually lulled into slowly but surely living just a little more comfortably, a little more extravagantly, a little more indulgently than in the days, weeks and months before.  How does that work?

Slowly over time, any spending that starts out as a splurge—like a $4.50 latte at Starbucks to treat ourselves, a pricey bottle of wine to celebrate, or going out to dinner on a special occasion—can gradually become an almost daily necessity if we make them routine.  Those acts are often triggered when we start making a good salary or get a raise.  After all, we have the extra money, right?   And as that “creep” of spending just a little more than yesterday becomes a new norm, we often find ourselves needing more and more such “rewards” to keep us happy and satisfied. If we aren’t careful, we can reach retirement with nothing to show for it. Fortunately, I believe a good cure for the dreaded lifestyle creep is to stay as mindful and focused on rightsizing as possible.

Three Big Reasons Why It Is SMART To Live Or Retire In Ajijic, Mexico

By Kathy Gottberg

When most people think of Mexico their thoughts usually go in one of two directions.  It’s either a party destination like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas—or a scary place with drugs, crime and beheadings.  My experience is much different.  After traveling to over a dozen locations in this vast country, I am proof positive that Mexico offers a huge variety of pleasing destinations.  But until Thom and I visited Ajijic (pronounced Ah-hee-heek) this summer, we never really considered Mexico as a viable alternative to life in the U.S.  Now having spent three weeks in this special community, I’ve discovered the top three reasons why so many people call it home.  Whether you are looking to move or not, you might want to compare the benefits of Ajijic to where you live now.  We sure are. Flexible Is My Word For 2018

By Kathy Gottberg

A common practice for bloggers and other lifelong learners is to pick one word to focus on as an intention for each new year.  For some reason, the word “flexible” or flexibility popped into my mind within the first couple of days of 2018.  Ever since then I’ve been playing with the idea.  Like buying a new outfit, it’s important to see if your word fits you—to see if it has a hold of you.  Now, with January quickly coming to an end, I decided it was time to reveal my word for 2018 to the world. Plus, I want to invite any of you who haven’t yet picked a word, to join me in allowing one word to mold your life in a more positive and SMART way for the remainder of the year.

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comWith Thanksgiving behind us, those living in the U.S. can expect to be swamped with messages of consumerism for the next 34 days. In fact, Black Friday, which many retailers have named as the most heavily shopped day of the year, is today. If you are anything like me, even with the best of intentions it’s easy to be mesmerized by the glamor of things being advertised everywhere—even when we know better. But rather than give in to the impulse, I instead decided to sit down and write out a few simple, but important, ways I want to stay rightsized over the coming holiday season. If you could use some help with your resolve, please check out my list and add some of your own suggestions in the comments below.  [Read more…]

We Didn’t Come To Get It Done

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365 With Memorial Weekend right around the corner, I think a lot of people are making plans for summer vacation. I know I am. I’ve also read that people spend more time planning their vacations than they do their lives—but that’s another topic for another blog post.   Then this morning I listened to another lecture by Abraham-Hicks and through the course of a question and answer period Abraham said, “You didn’t come to get it done.”   Another way of saying that is, “It’s the journey, not the destination.” However, if you are anything like me, I need to be reminded over and over that the gift of today is reason enough for my life.  What about you? 10 Reasons Why Rightsizing Is The Perfect Path To A Happy Retirement

By Kathy Gottberg

Rightsizing * A SMART Living Guide To Reinventing RetirementA big topic in my age group is retirement. About half of my friends are looking forward to it while the other half are already there. As for Thom and I, we see ourselves standing with a foot on both sides. We aren’t retired, but neither are we chained to our work. What makes us different from others hoping to retire soon is that we’ve embraced what I call rightsizing. Rightsizing is a process that any of us can do to come into greater alignment with our most cherished values and goals. On a practical level, rightsizing points to actions we can make at any age that will help before, and especially after, a person retires.

In case you are wondering, I am not a financial advisor. Most retirement “planning” comes from people who would like to manage your finances. That approach tends to put the focus on how much money you make, how much money saved, and how much you need in the future to maintain your current lifestyle. Rightsizing, on the other end, downplays money and instead puts the focus on what is most rewarding in your life.

What Did You Make Up Your Mind About Today?

By Kathy Gottberg

My husband Thom had a rather cantankerous relationship with his mother.  Bert, short for Roberta, had a very strong need for approval, especially from others. That led her to working every day to make Thom the perfect child. Unfortunately, the more she tried, the more rebellious he became. But even then, something she did do for him was to plant an extremely powerful seed in his mind. Ironically, rather than tell him directly, he overheard her saying it to a neighbor. That seed, that statement was, “Thom can do anything he sets his mind to.” Not only did that seed sprout and take root, it’s been a guiding principal in his life. And I’d bet, when you think about it, most of us live our entire lives based upon what we’ve set our mind to be, do, or have. Regrettably, many of us ignore the power of that set point as well as our ability to adjust it in a positive way by design. [Read more…]

New Evidence That Planning and Goal Setting Are Keys To Positive Aging

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comLike most people my age I am increasingly interested in what leads to aging well and happy. I am also keenly aware of how different that is from many of the conversations my parents had in later years. Rather than go through a depressing list of “organ – recitals” that often characterized our parents and their friends, the new emerging conversation about positive aging is leading in exciting and interesting directions every day. One recent study from the Netherlands combines the idea of healthy aging to people’s hopes, plans, and wishes for their future. Could it be that having goals and planning for certain experiences can make us happier and more satisfied as we age? This particular study says yes. [Read more…]

Uncovering Five Myths that Keep Us From Living A Thankful Life

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comThis week Thom and I are celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with friends in  Baja Mexico.  And because I have over 35o blog posts here on the site and many new subscribers, I decided to pick one of my favorite posts that I wrote about gratitude in the past and repost it.   I sincerely hope that you enjoy the reminders it contains.  I also want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read my blog and stay in touch with me.   I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with you all on a regular basis,  and together, I hope we will all continue to live happy and  SMART 365.

Did you know that some people believe it is impossible to live  thankfully and gratefully on a regular basis? Are you one of them?   What catches my interest most of all is how the reasoning to avoid gratitude is so similar to those who likewise sidestep feeling happy on a regular basis.   That led me to investigate some of the more common myths that exist for happiness—and observe at how those same myths apply to living thankfully 365. SMART Living 365

During the last couple of years, my focus for creating a happy and meaningful life has shifted. Now, in addition to exploring ways to create the most positive life possible for myself and others, I’ve begun including ideas of how we can all age well and happy. And because I happen to believe very strongly in the power of our focus, along with the benefit of affirmations, I went in search of the best quotes I could find on the subject. Any of us who believe that, “what we think about, we bring about,” as well as “what we dwell upon we become,” might benefit by reading the following quotes on a regular basis.
