The Joy And Benefits of Travel

By Kathy Gottberg

“We travel to grow up, wake up, and stay on our toes.” ~Robert Fuller

SMART TravelI am writing this blog post in anticipation of our coming 3+-week vacation to Europe.  In fact, by the time this post goes live on the SMART Living website and you read it, I am actually on the other side of the globe from where I live.  At the same time, thousands of people from around the world are descending upon my city for one of the biggest music festivals in the world—The Coachella.  And even though that awesome event is in my own back yard, I’m choosing to travel to Prague and Croatia because it is something I’ve always wanted to do.  So why do I and so many other people like to travel and are willing to spend the time, money and resources to do it?  Here are some ideas I’ve uncovered that go into making travel an art we can all appreciate. In Search of Passion, Excitement & Meaning From Fifty Shades of Grey

By Kathy Gottberg

“My inner goddess is jumping up and down, clapping her hands like a five year old.”~ E. L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey

SexyI haven’t read it—but 70 million other people have.   Advertised as an erotic romance, Fifty Shades of Grey is currently the fastest selling paperback book of all time surpassing the Harry Potter series in sales.  As a woman and a writer, the success and attention of this story has got my interest, even if the subject matter is beyond my usual genre.  That, and a recent conversation with a girlfriend got me asking myself why so many of us crave passion and excitement in our lives—and then how we sometimes go about finding it. Believe it or not, I’m now convinced that this book’s success is another indication of why we sometimes over-consume, over-eat, and even why we over-complicate our lives in so many ways.    [Read more…]

Midlife Minimalism—How Your Focus Changes & The Rewards Increase

By Kathy Gottberg
Filed under: Aware, Meaningful, Rightsized, Sustainable, Thankful

“We get too soon old and too late smart.” ~Pennsylvania Dutch proverb

T & KI read many online blogs and a large portion of them are about minimalism and simple living. That’s wonderful because I believe there is richness to simple living that goes far beyond having less stuff. I also think that since I’ve been embracing it more and more, my life has become happier, less stressful and far more meaningful. But something I’ve noticed is that the vast majority of blogs about minimalism are written primarily by those in their twenties to thirties. And while I’m psyched to know that young adults are embracing the lifestyle, I also believe that maturity offers a perspective that should not be overlooked. In fact, it is often those who have lived through multiple choices and experiences that have the most to offer others. That’s why I thought a few perspectives from midlife should be included in any discussion about minimalism or simple living.

The Science of Friendship—And Can Hoarding Be A Good Thing?

By Kathy Gottberg
Filed under: Aware, Meaningful, Sustainable, Thankful

“The only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people.” ~ George Vaillant

FriendsThose of us into simple living or minimalism knows that identifying and eliminating any thing superficial and nonessential in life is critical.  In fact, the television show “Hoarders” illustrates weekly the extreme burden that too much stuff can bring to a person’s life. But I’ve just come to realize that there is something that actually should be hoarded—and that “thing” is a friend.  Actually, an abundance of research now shows that finding, keeping and appreciating friends is good for our physical and mental health, good for our occupations, good for our creativity, will add years to our life, and enrich our experience in every way possible.  If we are willing to accept that as true, then understanding the science of friendship is one of the most important actions each of us can take to create a life of happiness, meaning and purpose during our time here on earth. Finding Your W.A.I. (Welcome, Accept, and Intentions) in the Coming Year!

By Kathy Gottberg

Finding Your WAI PathEvery New Year most people talk of resolutions.  Unfortunately, most of the talk is about how resolutions don’t work and end up causing more frustration and discouragement than any type of help.  The thing is, I’m fairly certain that unless we focus on what we do want and what’s important to us, we likely end up with a year that looks similar to the one before, or worse, one that is significantly less fulfilling.  In fact, without such clarity we’re like a person starting out on a journey with no purpose or destination in mind, or an airplane taking off without navigation.   So rather than eliminate resolutions altogether, I came up with a new W.A.I  (Welcome-Accept-Intentions) of looking at hopes and dreams for the coming year so that we may be better able to enjoy the journey for the next 365 days. The SMART Living 30-Day Gratitude Challenge

By Kathy Gottberg

Day 1–November 1, 2012

“If the only prayer you ever say in your whole life is ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” ~Meister Eckhart

Every November I start thinking about gratitude and thanksgiving in a big way.   That’s because Thanksgiving Day  falls on the fourth Thursday of every November in the U.S., but mostly because it is my favorite holiday of all.  Instead of all the hoopla of being pushed and pulled to get and give, Thanksgiving merely asks us to pause and reflect on the good in our life.   Plus it is usually celebrated by having dinner and spending time with people you care about most—and those who care about you—be they friends, family or neighbors.   For anyone attempting to live a life of happiness, simple living, contentment, peace and well being, Thanksgiving deserves special recognition. The 1%, Inequality and You

By Kathy Gottberg

If you’re anything like me you might not have thought much about inequality over the last week/month/year.  If you are white, upper middle class, have no debt, a good family income and are healthy—it doesn’t cross our mind much. Unfortunately, if you don’t fit in any of those categories, there is a good chance that you experience inequality in dozens of ways on a regular basis.  Even worse, you might not even be aware of how your opportunities for a better future for yourself and your family are slowly being eroded.   But because SMART Living 365 is about waking up and living consciously, responsibly and sustainably in everything we do—and then making choices and decisions that lead to greater happiness and wellbeing—learning about the growing inequality in our country is essential. A website named Midway Simplicity.com made it a regular practice to talk with a number of simplicity and minimal living bloggers about his or her version of minimalism or simplicity. I was honored to be included. Creating a Complaint Free Life

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

Several years ago a book entitled, “A Complaint Free World” became an overnight sensation.  To date, nearly ten million people have read the book and obtained purple rubber bracelets to help them recognize how much they complain on a regular basis.  The practice was designed so that once people recognized their complaints they could put an end to them and gradually transform their world.  This last week I came across my little purple bracelet and immediately realized that the bad habit of complaining was worming its way back into my life.  Right then I admitted I could use another dose of “complaint-free living” in my life and in my world. Goodness is Catching—The Gift of Unexpected Generosity

By Kathy Gottberg

Not long ago, a woman named Chris went with a friend to Disneyland. There in the massive parking lot of the Magic Kingdom, two other women approached asking if they would like free passes to the “Happiest Place On Earth.” The women offering the gift said they had two extra, and just wanted to give the other two away.  This simple act of generosity reminded Chris and her friend of the kindness of others, and restored within her a reminder that people are intrinsically good.  In fact, that charitable act inspired her to be more kind and generous herself.
