Finding Your W.A.I. (Welcome, Accept, and Intentions) in the Coming Year!

By Kathy Gottberg

Finding Your WAI PathEvery New Year most people talk of resolutions.  Unfortunately, most of the talk is about how resolutions don’t work and end up causing more frustration and discouragement than any type of help.  The thing is, I’m fairly certain that unless we focus on what we do want and what’s important to us, we likely end up with a year that looks similar to the one before, or worse, one that is significantly less fulfilling.  In fact, without such clarity we’re like a person starting out on a journey with no purpose or destination in mind, or an airplane taking off without navigation.   So rather than eliminate resolutions altogether, I came up with a new W.A.I  (Welcome-Accept-Intentions) of looking at hopes and dreams for the coming year so that we may be better able to enjoy the journey for the next 365 days. 2014–Reflections on Life, Simple Living and Happiness

By Kathy Gottberg

At the end of every year I have a habit of going back and reviewing things that worked well in my life in the last 365 days.  I think it’s useful to explore the actions, mindsets and understandings that have enhanced my well-being and happiness—and recognize those that didn’t, so they can be modified And because a big part of living SMART 365 is staying conscious, awake and aware—this practice might prove valuable for all of us.  I’ll start by sharing a few ideas that increased the quality of my life in 2012. A Christmas Wish For Peace

By Kathy Gottberg

Merry Christmas Everyone!  Millions of people all over the world are celebrating Christmas this weekend.  The one gift we want to offer everyone is something that cannot be bought—only shared.  That wish is for peace.

And one of our favorite ways to share it is in the words of young Mattie Stepanek.  Mattie as you may remember was a young man who died in 2004 at the age of 14.  Mattie, who passed away from a rare genetic disease, managed to write six books of poetry in his young life and touched millions around the planet including Oprah Winfrey and his hero Jimmy Carter.  [Read more…]

Beyond Suffering—What The Buddha Teaches About Tragedy

By Kathy Gottberg

KG TogetherSomething about Buddhism always bugged me.   Of course, it wasn’t Buddhism itself, but what I heard.  What stood out and bugged me was essentially the statement made by the Buddha that, “Life is suffering.”  Not only did I not believe it, I thought the whole of Buddhism revolved around that negative idea.  Rather than look deeper, I resisted the thought as though I could control the Universe and keep suffering away from either myself, or those I love.  Flash forward about 30 years.  Now I not only understand a great deal more about Buddhism, but I also agree that suffering can and does happen every day to scores of people all around the world.  In fact, after a tragedy like what happened at the school in Connecticut or recently in Paris, how is it possible to think for a minute that suffering isn’t real?  Of course, the lesson taught by the Buddha doesn’t stop there.  Instead, the Buddha explained that freedom and peace lie in a space beyond suffering, and that liberation is available to us all. 12/21/12—The End of The World—Or a New Beginning?

By Kathy Gottberg

EarthFor those of you who follow the ancient Mayan Calendar, the world ends on December 21, 2012.   For those of you into end-time predictions of any sort, a planet named Nibiru (sometimes called Planet X), supposedly discovered by the ancient Sumerians, will pass close to the Earth and wreck havoc and devastation on us all.  Theories ranging from a super massive black hole at the center of our universe, a global geomagnetic reversal, or a formula named “Timewave zero,” each holds claim to be the singularity of infinite complexity that will change the world as we know it.   And let’s not forget many of the world’s religions that predicted an apocalypse for several millennium.  While it may be easy to dismiss these theories as nothing more than “end-time hoopla,” is it possible there is something deeper going on?  Perhaps if we take a minute to look as the reasoning behind them all, we may find a SMART perspective that offers both hope and opportunity. The Life of You, Me and Pi—Ten Ideas Worth Remembering

By Kathy Gottberg

Last weekend Thom and I snuck away to the movies.  We haven’t gone much these days because most don’t seem to deliver a story worth watching.  Fortunately The Life of Pi had just been released.  Not only is the movie a stunning visual treat, the story is engaging and thought-provoking.  If you haven’t seen it, I strongly encourage you to take the time.  And as fantastical as the story may seem, you may find as I did, that the movie is a good allegory for all of us.   In fact, many of the choices made by Pi are choices most of us are asked to make as we journey through our lives. Christmas 2013…More STUFF? Or A Meaningful Experience?

By Kathy Gottberg
Filed under: Aware, Meaningful, Rightsized, Sustainable

A great example of Christmas excess.

Before we get too close to Christmas I thought it might be SMART to remind myself (and anyone else who is paying attention) to not get sucked into the holiday frenzy.   You know what I mean.  Ever since the beginning of September the retail outlets here in the U.S. have been pushing Santa and all things related.  Just like any drug, the pushers make everything seem so harmless, tantalizing and attractive. However, the truth is what makes the season special has very little to do with stuff, and everything to do with experience.  That’s why remembering why we do what we do and using our money, time and resources in the service of that which we say we support, is especially critical this time of year. Lessons From Gratitude–Day 22 of the SMART Living 30-Day Gratitude Challenge

By Kathy Gottberg

At the beginning of November I challenged myself to a 30-Day Gratitude Challenge.  I knew that it would add extra work to my already hectic schedule.  But I also knew that the timing was good.  November is one of my favorite months AND Thanksgiving was right around the corner.  Plus, everywhere I went people were talking about the coming U.S. elections.  And regardless of who they hoped would win—there seemed to be a lot of fear, anger and worry associated with the process.  Hurricane Sandy was also looming on the horizon. I knew I needed to take the focus off those things outside myself and place them firmly on the good that I have in my day-to-day life.  Hence, the gratitude challenge was born. [Read more…]

How Habits Can Change Your Life For The Better

By Kathy Gottberg
Filed under: Meaningful, Rightsized, SMART Book Reviews

Most of us will admit to having a habit or two.  Some may even admit to having quite a few.  It is the rare individual that will admit that more than 40% of their daily actions are habitual—but that’s true according to Charles Duhigg in his book “The Power of Habit—Why We Do What We Do In Life & Business.”   Like it or not, as humans we are creatures of habit.  However, whether those habits are good or bad—and whether those habits are completely unconscious or purposely planned is largely within our control.  In fact, learning what habits are and how they are created is an important step in creating a SMART life.   [Read more…]
