A Tale of Two Colonoscopies

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” so begins Charles Dickens classic novel, “A Tale of Two Cities.”  But that statement and the major themes of the story apply to most of the experiences of every person on the planet on a regular basis.   Do we allow the tragedy, inequity and oppression of life’s circumstances to beat us down—or like some characters in the book, do we reach for resurrection and transformation?  Even situations as routine or pedestrian as a colonoscopy offer us each of us a similar choice.  It’s SMART to always remember that decision is up to us. Retreating to Mindfulness and Timeless Awareness With Lama Surya Das

By Kathy Gottberg

This weekend Thom and I attended our first Dzogchen Buddhist Retreat.  As seminar junkies, we’ve taken tons of spiritual classes and workshops of an hour or two here or there that focused on Buddhism or meditation.  But this was our first official “retreat.”  And while an evening and one day may not appear to be much of a retreat, it certainly served to get us out and away from our usual lives. More importantly, it pulled the focus of our attention away from our usual thoughts and concerns, and placed it instead on the experience of “mindfulness” or inner awareness and spiritual compassion.   That switch of focus is a SMART thing to do every now and then, regardless of who you are or what you call it. SMART Living Takes Smart Buildings and Smart Cities To the Highest Level

By Kathy Gottberg
Filed under: Rightsized, Sustainable, What is SMART Living?

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

In case you didn’t know, Thom and I have been real estate brokers for over 25 years.  Never a good “salesperson,” I soon began writing about real estate rather than selling it.  On the other hand, Thom specializes in investment and commercial properties with a big emphasis on properties that are “green” and sustainable.  A recent aspect to the energy-efficient real estate industry is “smart technology” for buildings and now even cities.  But even though there may be an advantage to such technology and focus—it leaves out a critical ingredient.  In order for anything to be truly SMART—people and their motivations must be included in the equation. Work Less—Live SMARTer!

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working in Hawaii...

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working in Hawaii…

Do you think you work too hard?  You’re not alone.  Many people I talk to, especially those younger with families, report being over-worked, overwhelmed and clearly unable to take even a moment to pause and reflect on the direction of their life.  We all know that chronic overwork increases our stress levels, endangers our physical health, triggers depression and decreases our “life satisfaction.”  So why do we continue to put in long hours?  And what’s the solution?  It’s likely that the simple answer is to work less and live SMARTer.  In fact, there is evidence that working less not only increases the quality of an individual’s life—it is also much better for the entire planet.

In Defense of “Happy Holidays” for One & All!

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy Holidays everyone!  For those of us who are aware of the abundance of holiday celebrations that occur during December around the world, it’s easy and SMART to admit how appropriate that greeting is for us all.  It means no disrespect to anyone, and instead acknowledges that different people experience different ways to find meaning in their world.  In fact, even if you have a favorite way to celebrate, acknowledging with love, kindness and compassion the diversity among us, just might be the most spiritual and enlightened way to celebrate and enjoy the season. If You’re Going to Give—Give SMART—SMART Living Recommends Three Such Sites 12/12/11

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

Our last SMART Living 365 blog post suggested that we all reconsider or “rethink” the Christmas gifting process in a way that enriches both the giver and the receiver.  When any of us routinely buys gifts without having a clue what the other needs or wants, we are like sheep falling over a cliff just because those in front of us fall first.  If we want our gift to truly enrich someone we care for and love, it is SMART of us to stay awake, aware and conscious to their needs and motivations before making a purchase.  But what about a gift or donation to a charity?  What about if we want to donate money to a worthy cause in someone’s name?   How do we know what is “worthy” and where do we go to find out?   There are at least three websites that you might want to consider before making your decision.  They are:

GiveWell

Charity Navigator

Philanthropedia

Three Simple Ways to Practice Thanksgiving 365

By Kathy Gottberg

One of the shortest and sweetest paths to a happy and fulfilled life is the daily practice of giving thanks.  From one perspective, no other single spiritual practice is more universally accepted than the idea of being consistently grateful.  Not only is gratitude a fundamental element in most spiritual traditions, it is also an ongoing, reoccurring theme in most self-help, inspirational and motivationally focused books on the market.  Even science is jumping on the bandwagon and has begun to study the practice of gratitude as a way to increase the health and quality of a person’s life on many levels.  Simply put, being thankful 365 is the most important activity anyone can practice, at any stage of life, to create a happy, healthy and contented life.

Who/What Are You Listening To Today?

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365How many times have you seen a movie or listened to a story where a person has an angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other?  This example is classic because it’s universal to us all.  At any given time, on any given day, we have either the voice of our higher more compassionate self who is whispering in our ear—or we have that part of us that is most selfish, small-minded and paranoid sitting on the other.  The image of two little selves fighting for our attention is one that is graphically easy to remember.  Which do you listen to the most?

Seeing the Beauty Around Us

By Kathy Gottberg

What did you notice when you woke up this morning and started your day?  Was it beauty?  If you’re anything like me, you might not see much of anything until after a cup of coffee.  But once my eyes begin to focus, I attempt to make a regular habit of looking at the beauty I see all around me.   Actually, I believe that seeing beauty all around us is a habit we can all develop to create a happier life.

How Happy Do You Want To Be?

By Kathy Gottberg

One of the best-known quotes about happiness comes from President Abraham Lincoln.  He said, “A person is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be.”  That’s right, Lincoln, who was said to be the most respected and loved of any American President basically implied that my happiness, and your happiness, is up to us.  But why don’t more of us accept that as true?
