Torn Between Two Worlds

By Kathy Gottberg

Thom and I are renting a cottage at the beach until the end of September.  Sounds wonderful, right?  But I’m torn.  Yes, it’s still sizzling hot back home in our desert community, but once September hits things start to kick off.  Although not officially the beginning of the “desert season,” once school starts more and more activities pop up on the calendar. Traffic picks up, meetups get scheduled, and friends start calling with plans.  So even while I’m loving the cooler weather at the beach, part of me is anticipating seeing those friends and getting involved in social and volunteer events back home.

When I think about it, that tension between what I have and what I’m possibly missing is something that happens to me/us all the time in one form or another. It’s similar to the oxymoron of celebrating life in one moment and yet feeling pain or sadness at the same moment.  Or how about feeling optimistically excited, and yet somewhat anxious about what’s ahead?   And probably the biggest one, feeling grateful and happy while recognizing deep in our heart that there are huge challenges going on all around us.  How do we handle those paradoxes, and where do we go from there? Don’t Take Anything For Granted & Share Your Love—365!

By Kathy Gottberg

My older sister Ann passed on this week and rather than make myself crazy with everything I am called to do, I decided to share a post I wrote many years ago instead.  It was, and is, a simple and SMART reminder for us all.

Kloe

This week Thom and I experienced a dramatic reminder of this truth—don’t take anyone for granted and share your love with those you love every single day.   While most all of us would agree that this is an important part of SMART Living, everyone—me included, can use a reminder

Our “lesson” in this regard came this past Monday evening.  There was nothing special about the day—nothing bad, but nothing amazingly wonderful either.  We’d finished dinner and Thom was in the kitchen doing dishes.  I could see that the sun had finally set so I knew it would be getting cooler outside.  Our small mixed-terrier Kloe was watching me closely to see if it was time to go to the dog park before dark.  But before we did, Thom decided to take the garbage out to the trash bins with Kloe trailing behind. 7 Things I Learned To Do, And Not Do, From My Mom

Mom and I during our first trip to Hawaii in 1983

As a kid, I wanted to think of my mother as the most beautiful, loving and witty woman in the world. Didn’t we all? Then as I teenager, I came to the conclusion that she probably didn’t know half as much as I thought I knew about absolutely everything. Finally as an adult, I’ve come to understand that she was just a human being doing the best she could with the awareness and consciousness that she possessed at the time. Thankfully, I no longer need her to be other than who she was, and I can appreciate the love and gifts I learned from her along the way.   That’s why in honor of Mother’s Day I decided to look back on the things she taught me to both do, and NOT do, to live a long, happy and healthy life.

The Second Annual SMART Living 30-Day Gratitude Challenge-2013

Gratitude #1a

From My Renewed Mind.com

Most of us know that one of the best ways to live a SMART, happy and fulfilled life is to practice gratitude on a regular basis. As Mathew Henry said, “Thanksgiving is good, but Thanks Living is better.”  Unfortunately, if you’re anything like me it’s far too easy to get stuck in our routines or troubles and let the doing of it slip our mind on a daily basis.  That’s why for the second year in a row I am challenging myself to highlight aspects of “Thanksgiving” here on my blog in a way that keeps much of my focus and attention on both the feeling and expression of gratitude every day throughout the month. And hopefully, just like last year, you will be inspired enough to join me and “share the gratitude” in any way that you can. [Read more…]
