Is It Better To Look Good or Feel Good?

SMART Living 365 and feeling good

Is it better to feel marvelous or look marvelous?

Last weekend I decided to treat myself to a bit of relaxation by reading one of my magazines. As usual, I flipped through the slick front pages of glamorous women wearing designer clothes, ads promising hot sex and love by simply using certain cosmetics, and a list of the “Best of the Best” showcasing uber-expensive items the magazine believes we “must have.” Digging deeper to find something beyond the frivolous, I spotted, “Slow Anti-Aging ~ The New Secret To Looking Your Best.”  Unfortunately, instead of offering advice on how to live well and happy no matter what your age, the entire article focused on expensive treatments that slow the effects of getting older while fooling others into thinking you come by it naturally.   What?   Is that even possible? Seven Blocks To Living A Rightsized Life

By Kathy Gottberg

Rightsizing * A SMART Living Guide To Reinventing Retirement by Kathy GottbergI am very pleased to announce that my latest book is now published and available in either print or as an ebook on Amazon.   Titled Rightsizing * A SMART Living Guide to Reinventing Retirement, this book is the second in what I hope will continue to be a series. What is Rightsizing? Simply put, rightsizing is the conscious choice to create a life and a lifestyle that more sustainably aligns with your unique Self in the best possible way at every stage. This small volume compiles the best of what I’ve written on the subject here on SMART Living 365 along with some bonus ideas that presents them in a way I think most readers will appreciate.  The good thing about rightsizing your life is that it doesn’t matter what your age or situation. Although many reach retirement before finally making it happen, rightsizing can benefit everyone and leads to more happiness, fulfillment and peace of mind than ever before regardless of circumstances. Of course, just like most things that are desirable, it comes at a price. Here is a list of the most common obstacles that keep many of us from choosing a rightsized life. [Read more…]

My Top 10 Favorite Quotes From Abraham-Hicks

What do you see reflected in the world around you?

For the last couple of years one of my favorite speakers to listen to when taking my morning walk is Abraham-Hicks.   Regardless of whether the source of their inspiration comes from one woman’s mind or channeled spirits from a higher realm, I find much of it to be an empowering way to look at life. With a big emphasis on finding happiness and feeling good about life in general, what I hear during my morning walk is both healthy for my body and good for my soul. This week I heard Esther Hicks say something that made me stop, pause and make a note to myself as a reminder. That’s when I realized it might be good for me to share other favorites that prove beneficial to me on a regular basis. [Read more…]

The Truth Behind “You Create Your Own Reality”

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comThe phrase, “you create your own reality” has been part of the Western vernacular for at least several decades now. Originally a statement promoted by those with a more progressive perspective on life, the idea behind the phrase is now commonly found everywhere from books to television, to popular music and in movies. But while I’ll admit that it is empowering to think I influence my world, and easy to imagine that your reality can be very different from mine, obviously that doesn’t mean I can just flap my arms and fly just because I want to “create that.” So what does the statement really mean? Is it true? And if yes, how does that lead to a SMART and happy life? [Read more…]

Do You Like To Play The Game or Just In It For The Trophy?

Like the game or just going after the trophy?

The other day during my morning walk I was listening to a talk by Abraham-Hicks who is the author of The Law Of Attraction.   I find that listening to talks while walking makes the time go quickly, and if I’m listening to something uplifting I start my day in a positive way.  During that particular morning Abraham-Hicks was responding to a question from a young man who wanted to know why it was taking so long for his dreams to be realized.  Like many people, he wanted to know if he was doing something wrong or if there was something he could do to make it happen faster.  That’s when Abraham-Hicks asked the young man a question that made me stop, rewind my iPod and listen again.  She asked, “Do you think any successful person is doing what they do just for the trophy?  Or do you think they love the game?”  When I heard those questions I knew it applied to most people, myself included, in more ways than we usually consider. Ready for a Great New Year!

I’ve never been a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions.  I’ve been around long enough to know that most of the time they might seem like a good idea on January 1—but they seldom have the power to make it through all 365 days of the year.  But what I do believe is that you and I have a great deal more influence on what happens in any given year than we give ourselves credit for.   And much of the time that influence can be consciously directed to create both a fantastic year, and a fantastic life.  If you would like to experience the “best” year of your life, I invite you to consider the following ideas that you can use to do just that! Why Can’t We Just Get Along?—And Other Thoughts on Compassion & Communication

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.com AlienHave you ever asked yourself what would happen if aliens ever found our planet and began monitoring our TV networks?  Thom and I have asked ourselves that question—especially after hearing about reality shows like “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”  But even if those aliens only tuned into our news channels and programs, what do you think their view of the human race would be?  Unfortunately, the day-to-day hostility and aggression frequently viewed on those programs would likely be enough for any alien to determine that our species is egocentric, violent, and highly competitive.  In fact, if you watch much TV news at all, the average person would probably be tempted to think the world is a very scary place and that any minute something horrible could happen.  But is that true?  Are we really that egocentric and violent?  Or are we actually much more compassionate and empathetic than we sometimes believe?  Maybe exploring those questions is one way to find out why we struggle to get along in this day and age. Be About YOUR Business

By Kathy Gottberg

Most of the time I consider myself to be one of the most fortunate people on the planet.  I have a wonderful life—I’m healthy and have a great relationship—I also get to work and write about things that matter to me on a consistent basis.  But every now and then something pops up that makes me pause and wonder if my writing and work is making any kind of positive difference. Other times things happen or people do unexpected and unpleasant things that catch me by surprise. That’s when it is SMART for me to remember the words of a wise woman named Byron Katie.  One of the solutions she suggests for when we are feeling stressed out or unhappy is to “Stay In Your Own Business.”  In fact, she is very clear that most time when we are struggling with a situation we are in someone else’s business—and the simple practice of recognizing that fact is usually all it takes to bring us back to ourselves.
