Monday 10/10/11—KIVA.org Is A SMART Way To Help Others & Ourselves

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

Did you know that one of the best ways to help yourself is to help others?  Dozens of studies demonstrate that people who volunteer and aid others are themselves on the receiving end of both obvious and hidden benefits.  That’s why this week we think it’s SMART to suggest one of our favorite “giving” websites—that website is Kiva.org.   Do yourself a favor this week and help someone else.  Kiva makes it easy. Remembering That Our Future Is In Our Hands

By Kathy Gottberg

A favorite story I heard long ago is about how some young boys tried to fool a wise old woman who lived in their village.  The boys, who had seen the woman hobble about town just couldn’t understand why the adults always seem to treat her with respect.  Putting their heads together, they schemed to find a way to show how pathetic she really was.  Routinely they tried to come up with questions they thought she’d never be able to answer—but she always had something wise and relevant to say.  Still, they never stopped trying to trip her up.

One day a particularly mischievous boy in the group came up with the perfect question that would be impossible for the old woman to answer correctly.  He plotted a plan to hold a small live bird behind his back in his cupped hands.  He would then ask the wise woman, “Is the bird in my hands alive or is it dead?”  Naturally, if the woman said the bird was alive, the boy intended to quickly squeeze the life out of it and answer, “No, the bird is dead.”  If the woman said the bird is dead, then the boy would merely present the live bird proving her wrong.  Either way, the boy laughed thinking he couldn’t lose. Four Tasks For A Happy and Meaningful Life

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

According to a Cree Native American tradition that originated from the very beginning of creation, every morning when the sun comes up our Creator gives each of us four tasks for that day:

1) First we must learn at least one meaningful thing;

2) Next we must teach at least one meaningful thing to another person; [Read more…]

Don’t Stop Believing—Or The Creation of your Dream Life Starts Today!

By Kathy Gottberg

I have a confession to make.  During the summer, I started watching the TV series “Glee.”  Maybe some of you have been watching it all along, but I never got into it even though I heard from a number of people that it was fun, touching at times, and worth the trouble.  But because we were out-of-town for the last couple of months and away from our usual DVR programs, we turned to Netflix and I started watching the entire 22 previous episodes online.  The main reason I’m sharing my new Glee addiction is because a primary theme of the show is “Don’t Stop Believing.”  And that has me thinking a lot about what I do and don’t believe—and how that has helped co-create my life.

Enjoying the Good Things In Life—For Free!

The best things in life are free!

The best things in life are free!

Yesterday evening Carlsbad, California began its Annual Music Festival with a free Village Music Walk. Similar to free art walks held regularly in cities around the county, the music walk was an introduction to the music to be performed at different venues over the weekend—and just like most art walks—it was absolutely free. Now, most of us know deep down that the best things in life aren’t “things.” But until we stop, think about it and then start enjoying the many free experiences that bring us joy, we might be missing out on the good right in front of us.

Forget Being a Drama Queen—Be a Queen of Calm

By Kathy Gottberg

Most of us are drama queens—yes, even you, my macho friends!  While it is pleasant to hear good news from others, most of us are more easily sucked into situations where something unusual and oftentimes dreadful occurs.  Psychologists say that urge comes from an inborn biological imperative in place designed to keep us safe and constantly on the look out of danger.  But for most of us, our lives are routinely safe and secure.   So, instead of looking out for lions and tigers and bears, we are drawn into the dramas around us with amazing fascination.  And instead of choosing something saner or more helpful, we frequently pass it on to others rather than taking the high road and doing otherwise.  That’s why it is SMART to let go of your inner drama queen and instead become a queen of calm.

Permission to Slow Down–Ending the Addiction of Busy-ness

By Kathy Gottberg

“There’s more to life than increasing its speed.” – Mohandas Gandhi

Thom & Kloe showing us one way to slow down.

It’s summertime here in the Coachella Valley where I live, and because it is the desert southwest, it is expectedly hot outside.  While we locals have certain tricks and techniques to stay cool, most of the time the heat of the season makes me lethargic and under-motivated.  While none of us like to think of ourselves as lazy, me included, maybe the season is both an invitation and permission to slow down, relax and enjoy life.  After all, pushing yourself when it’s extremely warm (or cold) outside isn’t SMART no matter how you look at it. Don’t Take Anything For Granted & Share Your Love—365!

By Kathy Gottberg

Kloe

This week Thom and I experienced a dramatic reminder of this truth—don’t take anyone for granted and share your love with those you love every single day.   While most all of us would agree that this is an important part of SMART Living, everyone—me included, can use a reminder

Our “lesson” in this regard came this past Monday evening.  There was nothing special about the day—nothing bad, but nothing amazingly wonderful either.   We’d finished dinner and Thom was in the kitchen doing dishes.  I could see that the sun had finally set so I knew it would be getting cooler outside.  Our small mixed-terrier dog Kloe was watching me closely to see if it was time to go to the dog park before dark.  But right before we did, Thom decided to take the garbage out to the trash bins with Kloe trailing behind. SMART Living is seeing the Good AND Laughing on A Regular Basis

By Kathy Gottberg

Let’s face it.  We live in an amazing world filled with all sorts of incredible things.  Yet, because humans tend to adjust to just about anything very quickly, we usually forget how great our lives are.  SMART Living asks us to slow down, look around and pay attention—and then be thankful.   I found this great short comedy video on FaceBook today and I think it says something very important in a short, funny and irreverent way.  What do you think?

Meaning In Life—Explaining the M in SMART Living

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

In order to be happy and fulfilled, all people everywhere share one fundamental need regardless of their background, race, religion, education or any number of cultural differences—that one thing is “meaning.”  When we have meaning, we believe our life has a purpose and that our being here matters.  In other words, in order to live SMART every day, a sense of meaning is critical.

One of the champions for the value of meaning was a man named Viktor Frankl.  As a three-year survivor of the horror of Nazi concentration camps, he eventually became an eminent psychotherapist.  While many of Frankl’s fellow prisoners died in the camps, he believed that a key reason for his survival was the inner strength he derived from meaning.
