Quotes To Inspire Courage, Hope And Hanging In There

By Kathy Gottberg

As most of you know, I’m a big fan of quotes.  In the beginning I planned to do just one quote on an inspiring photo.  That was until I started researching and came up with so many that I couldn’t possibly only choose one. If you’re anything like me, just reading through these made me feel that life goes on no matter what.  I’m not saying it is easy. But let’s never forget that people throughout history have managed to endure, stay hopeful and eventually thrive once it becomes the past.  Let’s be those kinds of people.

With that in mind, here are some quotes that inspired me.

  1. COMES THE DAWN

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security,

And you begin to understand that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises.

And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head held high and your eyes open,

With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.
You learn to build your roads

On today because tomorrow’s ground
Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have
A way of falling down in midflight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden and decorate
Your own soul, instead of waiting

For someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you can really endure,

That you really are strong
And you really do have worth

And you learn and learn … and you learn
With every goodbye you learn.

~Veronica A. Shoftstall

  1. “Always say “yes” to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is? What could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say “yes” to life — and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.” ~Eckhart Tolle

  1. “When you come to the edge of all that you know, you must believe one of two things: there will be ground to stand on… or you will grow wings to fly.” ~ O.R. Melling

Kathy, there are a lot of truisms in these quotes. I especially like the ones about courage and inner strength, like Edmund Hillary’s “ It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” And this one: “ Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”
And also Martin Luther King Jr’s quote: “ The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

    Thanks for collecting these quotes.

One of the many things you and I have in common, Kathy, is I am also a big fan of quotes. I also strongly feel how that life goes on no matter what. I bookmarked your amazing list. Number 2 is totally new to me. A flashback on how much I used to appreciate Ann Landers. Number 21 is possibly what you and I were discussing, Kathy. ‘How we have been preparing for this moment our entire life.’ Number 28 is a favourite along the lines of gratitude. Number 47 brought tears to my eyes. Number 50 gave me goosebumps. Thank you for being you, Kathy. xx

Kathy, I found these quotes to be especially hopeful and uplifting. Please link up this post on my page for 10 on the 10th, where we are sharing 10 favorite quotes, Bible verses or songs. This is such a comfort.

You provided quotes from so many deep, thoughtful folks but some of the quotes that spoke most to me were from people who are not necessarily considered renowned philosophers. Thank you for seeing the value in their words, too.

A beautiful and meaningful set of quotes, Kathy, perfect for the times in which we find ourselves. I’ve always been fond of #23, so practical and realistic! Years ago, maybe high school (?), I saw a poster with that quote and a kitten dangling by one claw meowing its head off! I’ve been there! Hope you are hanging in there as well and taking good care of yourselves!

Hi, Kathy – I agree that our attitude right now is everything. As you always say, we can’t control so many things, but we can control how we respond to them.
Warm hugs to you and Thom.

Lots of great quotes here. I’m a great believer in how much ones attitude matters and this current situation certainly has been a test. I think Haruki Murakami’s quote (#37), “And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” is especially apt for what’s going on and a good reminder that the storm will pass, but who we are when we come out of it is up to us.

Hi Janis! Yes, isn’t that a good one. I’d never heard of Haruki Haruki before I saw this quote. I googled him and was amazed at all the books and articles he’s written. Interesting man for sure and how relevant to point out that who we are when we find ourselves on the other end of this will be interesting. ~Kathy

Comes the Dawn – I knew it as After Awhile. Love, love, love those words. Two quotes, origins unknown, have always inspired me:
All things are difficult before they are easy. Difficulties are mean to arouse, not discourage.
Not unlike Wayne Dyer in #9.

Hi Mona! I just googled it and here is what I found:

“…a woman by the name of Veronica A. Shoffstall wrote to “Ask Ann Landers” column claiming she was the author and that she wrote it when she was 19, in 1971. In 2004, another woman, Judith B. Evans claimed to be the “authentic author” of this poem. And in 2015, yet another woman, Veronica Rodriguez claimed to be the authentic author of “Comes The Dawn.”

Judith B. Evans retracted her claim when it was revealed to her that the poem already existed in Spanish many years before her claim.

In fact, the poem, “Comes The Dawn”, also known under the titles of “You Learn” and “After A While”, is one half of a longer poem “Aprendiendo”, which was written in Spanish and which has been attributed to Jorge Luis Borges (24 August 1899 – 14 June 1986), Argentinian poet, writer and essayist.”

Here is a link to a website that I got the above from and it includes the LONGER version of the poem. Interesting. Thanks for letting us know. ~Kathy

That poem by Veronica Shoftstal was new to me, & I LOVED it.

Quotations by themselves don’t move me. It’s so easy to say things. But quotations by people like Nelson Mandela, who’ve been through the fire — those impress me.

    So thanks!
