Why It Is SMART To Become An Everyday Futurist

This last week I happened to find and listen to an online interview of a woman named Karen Sands who calls herself a positive aging futurist.  While I’ve never really thought of myself as a one, and I’m guessing you haven’t either, she made a convincing argument for why we should all at least think about it.  Why?  Because as I’ve written about before, and she confirmed in her own way, if we want to know where we are headed in life, having a clear destination is critical.  That doesn’t mean you can’t adjust or change as life unfolds.  But it does offer a target that will likely include a future we want to experience. Tai Chi – The Path To A Moving Meditation On Life

Thom and I toyed with meditation on and off for several decades until we finally committed to a daily practice a little over four years ago.  Then a couple of months ago Thom suggested we take a tai chi class together, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that tai chi is considered to be a “moving meditation.”   In many ways, the experience of tai chi manages to broaden, deepen and enhance what we are already doing. Volunteering—Seven Reasons Why Serving Others Serves Us

Serving others serves us.

For the last two years I have volunteered for a local organization called The Ophelia Project where I mentor teenage girls enrolled in high school.  While not well known, I first learned of the organization from another volunteer named Sandy who told me how much she loved the experience.  She explained that although it was an eight-month long commitment per year, adding up to about 12-15 hours a month, the time spent was some of the most rewarding things she did in her life.  Right after that conversation, I got in touch with the director of Ophelia and signed up.
