10 Lessons About Life I’ve Learned By Blogging

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365Most of the time I think I am one of the most fortunate and privileged persons on the planet because I get to write and do what I love all the time.   I began writing seriously back in the mid-eighties then took up blogging seven years ago. Four years ago I created SMART Living 365 and every week since do my very best to share ideas about how each of us can live a happy, meaningful and rewarding life every day of the year.   But although the mission of SMART Living usually keeps me focused on those things that inspire me and others, I do have my challenges. Ordinarily that has nothing to do with the writing, and everything to do with managing a website with limited technological understanding—like the last two weeks! Yet even then, the gift of blogging extends far beyond putting out an article on schedule and having everything go as planned. Ever wonder why a blogger, blogs? Maybe it’s because blogging offers life lessons available to us all. [Read more…]

7 Life Lessons From An Episode of Chopped!

By Kathy Gottberg

Chopped--food Network My husband Thom and I have watched Chopped for several years now. Even though we are not big fans of reality TV, there is something about the mix of tasty food, cooking, creativity, and drama that caught our attention. If you haven’t seen it, Chopped is a weekly program on the Food Network that showcases four different chefs each week as they compete to create the most artistic and flavorful dishes in a set amount of time. After watching dozens of episodes, it occurred to me that many of the things we witness week after week is similar to what we all face on a regular basis. That’s when I came up with seven life lessons contained in every episode of Chopped. [Read more…]

Love to Travel—Love to Come Home

By Kathy Gottberg

“Wherever you go, there you are.”  ~Jon Kabat-Zinn

IMG_0574[1]     By now it is probably obvious that I love to travel.  But what you might not realize is that I also love coming home.  It wasn’t always that way.  Years ago I was constantly scheming up ways to get out of town.  Naturally, the more exotic the location the better—but I really wasn’t that picky.  Above all, I longed to escape to the open road and the infinite possibility that it held.  When I finally had to come home it was more like a punishment, or at least the penalty that must be paid until the next adventure came along.  Then somewhere along the line my thinking started changing—until now I am as happy returning home as I am packing my bags to go.  So what’s different?  Ultimately, I’ve come to believe that coming home after any length of time provides a huge mirror into a person’s life.  What we think is important, what we feel we have to be and do, and even who we think we are, are all reflected in the thoughts and images of what we must return to after we’ve been away.   [Read more…]

The Life of You, Me and Pi—Ten Ideas Worth Remembering

By Kathy Gottberg

Last weekend Thom and I snuck away to the movies.  We haven’t gone much these days because most don’t seem to deliver a story worth watching.  Fortunately The Life of Pi had just been released.  Not only is the movie a stunning visual treat, the story is engaging and thought-provoking.  If you haven’t seen it, I strongly encourage you to take the time.  And as fantastical as the story may seem, you may find as I did, that the movie is a good allegory for all of us.   In fact, many of the choices made by Pi are choices most of us are asked to make as we journey through our lives.
