Happiness by Design – Design into Action

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy New Year!  This is my final week away and I’m happy to introduce you to Pat as my guest blogger.  Pat is another blogger who writes about and explores many SMART Living ideas that we can all use to create a happier and more meaningful life.  She also has a lot of wisdom for those of us entering the “third act” of our lives and readily shares it on her blog  Retirement Transition. Thank you, Pat, for filling in for me and for explaining how we can create happiness by design and then put that design into action.

As we enter this New Year, I ask myself, how can I better live my values?

I’ve often said that our life will happen, either by design or by default, and it’s our own responsibility to make it what we want it to be.  Personally, I want to design my life at this stage.   So I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what I want this stage of life to look like.

But there is design, the plans and intent–and then the real action, or what you actually do. Sometimes intention does not turn into behavior. At this time of year, that can become very apparent with New Year’s resolutions!

So it’s not just about designing your life, it’s about activating it as well. [Read more…]

Flexible Is My Word For 2018

By Kathy Gottberg

A common practice for bloggers and other lifelong learners is to pick one word to focus on as an intention for each new year.  For some reason, the word “flexible” or flexibility popped into my mind within the first couple of days of 2018.  Ever since then I’ve been playing with the idea.  Like buying a new outfit, it’s important to see if your word fits you—to see if it has a hold of you.  Now, with January quickly coming to an end, I decided it was time to reveal my word for 2018 to the world. Plus, I want to invite any of you who haven’t yet picked a word, to join me in allowing one word to mold your life in a more positive and SMART way for the remainder of the year.

10 Ways To Be More Hopeful And Happy In The New Year

By Kathy Gottberg

hopeful SMART Living 365.comFor as long as I can remember I have always encountered a new year with optimism and hope. Even when Y2K or the Mayan 2012 (remember them?) were on the horizon and then passed, I believed that any obstacle we faced in a new year could be overcome by either going over, around, or through the problems in front of us. Now here in 2017, we are faced with new and interesting challenges. But again, it is not my nature, nor the reality that I live in, to believe that optimism and hope are suddenly impossible. As I, and others far wiser than me have said, “Pain may be inevitable, but suffering is always optional.” With that in mind, I’ve spent the first few days of the year coming up with what I believe are ten ways to embrace more happiness and hope in the next 365 days. 60-FOR-60 And Achieving YOUR Intentions/Goals in 2015

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.In 2015 I turn 60. Yep. I was born in 1955 and that means I, along with a bunch of other people I know, will turn 60 during the coming year. But rather than lament the event, I intend to celebrate all year long. Then when I heard from a fellow blogger about the idea of 60-FOR-60, I decided to take it on as a way to commemorate this important milestone. I’ll explain the details a bit further but regardless your age, you too can participate. But first, in order to achieve this goal or intention, I returned to a book I read last year that offers some great reminders about how every one of us, 60 or not, can achieve their goals in the coming year.
