30 Christmas Quotes To Get You in The Holiday Mood

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comI am proof positive that a person can be a semi-minimalist, anti-consumer, nonreligious, childfree person who lives in the desert southwest where it never snows, and STILL love Christmas. That’s because I don’t equate the holiday season with any of those labels. To me, Christmas is a time to celebrate the life I have been given and to share and generate peace on earth and good will to all people. And because so many others also celebrate the season in a somewhat similar manner, I think the vibration of joy, peace and happiness is amplified as many of us come together with the same perspective. With that in mind, I spent some time this week looking through hundreds of quotes about Christmastime in order to help me remember and share some of what I consider some of the best thoughts behind the holiday. Is it possible a birthday is more about what you give than what you get?

So May is my birthday month. On May 23rd I turn 59. Yes, really! I only get to say that once so here it is in writing. And as I was sitting around thinking about how I wanted to celebrate I came up with a couple of ideas. Most importantly I want to offer all of you, my SMART readers a gift. If that’s sounds even remotely interesting, and/or you are curious about what I am giving away, please read all the way to the bottom of the post to discover how you can claim your free birthday gift from me.

But my thoughts about birthdays don’t stop there. By the time you get to be my age you’ve certainly been-there done-that with traditional ways to celebrate. So how can we celebrate in a way that makes this year stand out and not only be different, but be one of the more special years of all?  [Read more…]

A Christmas Wish For Peace

By Kathy Gottberg

Merry Christmas Everyone!  Millions of people all over the world are celebrating Christmas this weekend.  The one gift we want to offer everyone is something that cannot be bought—only shared.  That wish is for peace.

And one of our favorite ways to share it is in the words of young Mattie Stepanek.  Mattie as you may remember was a young man who died in 2004 at the age of 14.  Mattie, who passed away from a rare genetic disease, managed to write six books of poetry in his young life and touched millions around the planet including Oprah Winfrey and his hero Jimmy Carter.  [Read more…]

The Best Gift For Any Holiday—Isn’t the “Self-Gift”

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking this year about the best and SMARTest way to celebrate the holiday season.  While I’m no expert, Thom and I have tried several different ways throughout the years—everything from the traditional family in “It’s A Wonderful Life” to a vacation in Hawaii ala “Christmas with the Kranks.”  While some experiences were more meaningful than others, I’m pretty certain I’ve discovered what it’s NOT.  And even though I’m okay with buying myself something I want or need when necessary, I think it’s best to NOT end up making our Christmas or any holiday “present” about “self-gifting.”  I mean really!?!  Before that idea gains any more acceptable traction, let’s remember that the true meaning of a gift is something that we give—not something we receive. By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

This week SMART Living 365 recommends two websites connected to each other.  The first is CharityFocus.org—which encourages us to be “selfish” by being generous and kind to one another.  The second sister-site is KarmaTube.org, which is a collection of inspiring videos accompanied by simple actions that everyone can take.  These two sites run fully by volunteers, each attempt to put the statement made by Gandhi into practice when he said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

By Kathy Gottberg

Happy SMART Day Everyone!

Did you know that one of the best ways to help yourself is to help others?  Dozens of studies demonstrate that people who volunteer and aid others are themselves on the receiving end of both obvious and hidden benefits.  That’s why this week we think it’s SMART to suggest one of our favorite “giving” websites—that website is Kiva.org.   Do yourself a favor this week and help someone else.  Kiva makes it easy.
